What is MetaPWR?

What is Metabolic Resistance Training?

Studies show that metabolic resistance training is one of the best, most intense strategies for building muscle and burning fat. It's done through specific intense resistance exercises that increase the efficiency of your body's metabolism, which burns more calories at rest.

So how exactly does metabolic resistance training work, you might be asking? I’m going to keep it real simple for you – so stay with me! This will only take one minute out of your day but it may be the most powerful information you’ve read about how to train smarter, more effectively and get better results in less time.

How It Works

It’s all to do with your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). MetaPWR aims to increase your RMR. Your RMR is the amount of calories your body needs to survive and carry out essential bodily functions (think breathing, digestion etc).

Your RMR accounts for 60-75% of your total daily calories burned. Yep that’s right. So increasing your RMR will result in more calories and fat burnt, with less effort, without the need for a restrictive diet.

Have a look at the pie chart below to see how many calories you burn daily through your RMR compared to physical activity (i.e. your daily exercise).

As you can see, trying to do more exercise each week isn’t necessarily going to increase your metabolism. That’s a small part of the chart and this is where people get it wrong. It’s your RMR that you want to target. So you have to change your training to change your metabolism.

When you go for a steady run or doing any moderate intensity exercise, you are mostly using your aerobic energy system, which means you are mostly burning fat. You might be thinking – well, that’s what I want. But the problem is that you are burning fat only for the duration of your run, and it’s not as much as you might think.

When we challenge the body and do metabolic resistance training, we are working our anaerobic energy system, which uses mostly stored carbohydrates for immediate energy during your workout, not fat. However, here's where it gets interesting...

Working your anaerobic energy system gets the body into EPOC (Excessive Post-Exercise Energy Consumption). This is more commonly referred as the “After-Burn” you feel during and immediately after exercise (because you are burning calories after your workout). It’s when you work SO hard that you are puffing and panting, and literally can’t talk (think short, sharp training).

With Metabolic Resistance Training, your body creates a BIG oxygen debt during your workout, so it aims to deliver oxygen to the working muscles afterwards, because it couldn't during the workout (see chart below for comparison of oxygen debt and therefore EPOC between moderate and high intensity exercise)

 

Your body works very hard to get it back to balance (or homeostasis) and it uses stored fat to do this. It's during this process where it burns LOTS of fat. Lots of calories! In fact, metabolic resistance training is proven to burn not only more calories during your workout, but hundreds of calories UP TO 48 HOURS AFTER your workout.

So that means that when you are sitting at your desk all day for work, when you are relaxing, when you are asleep, you are burning more fat. Your overall RMR increases – or in other words, you increase your metabolism.

The best thing about this is that you don’t have to train for long durations, and you get better results. That’s smart training for busy people!
